DOULA INQUIRIES

What is a doula?

A doula is a trained professional who provides emotional and physical support to expectant mothers before, during, and after childbirth.

How is a doula different from a midwife?

A midwife is a licensed medical professional who is responsible for the medical care of the mother and baby. A doula, on the other hand, provides emotional and physical support to the mother but is not a medical provider.

What are the benefits of having a doula?

Recent study: Among the three types of providers of continuous support, someone in a doula role appears to offer the greatest set of benefits to laboring women. In comparison with women receiving no continuous labor support, women with doula role support were an impressive:

  • 39 percent less likely to have a cesarean birth

  • 35 percent less likely to have a negative birth experience

  • 15 percent more likely to have a spontaneous vaginal birth
